Another reason the South is important today

The South made significant population gaines in the last census while much of the North lost congressional seats

  1. And the increase in Southern states is thought to be largely due to increased Latino population. Who tend to vote Democratic (and who tend to be generally more engaged and well informed, in my view, many coming from places where you fought for your convictions with guns, or were murdered by US backed state thugs. And Mexico, where, when they steal a presidential election, next day two million people are in the streets, whereas here, nothing happens except maybe people complain that their favorite TV show gets preempted by the news coverage.) The bad news is that Republicans control redistricting in those states by virtue of controlling state legislatures and governorships and will try to gerrymander to their advantage, which is illegal and can be prevented if we stay on our toes.

  2. Republicans control the state of Georgia both publicly and privately; and both through their own party of course, but also through the Georgia Democratic Party. Their control is to such a degree, that I, upon coming to Georgia 25 years ago as a California Independent/Kennedy Democrat, found it absolutely incredible and inexplicable. Now, after 25 years, I am no longer shocked, nor do I find it difficult to understand. Southern Democrats (with the exception of many old-guard, Civil Rights Era, veteran Black Democrats) are not Democrats by any true Democrat’s definition. Their poster boy is Zell Miller. He was and is the rule, rather than the exception. The gerrymandering Mr. Conway warns of cannot (will not?) be stopped by the Georgia Democratic Party. I cannot comment as to the Democratic Party in other southern states but I suspect the situation is the same. And the last several decades’ tilt to the right in this country, I think, bears witness to that.
    God help us all.
